US Resorts Re-opening in May
A dozen or so US ski areas usually stay open into May, but this year more have announced they’re staying-open or re-opening for at least the first weekend of May.
After a fairly dismal start to the season for snowfall six months ago (blamed at the time on an unusually strong El Niño), the latter half of 23-24 has brought snowy abundance to many ski areas across the US.
It just keeps coming, with still-open resorts in the Rockies reporting a powder weekend to end April.
A dozen or so US ski areas usually stay open into May, but this year more have announced they’re staying-open or re-opening for at least the first weekend of May.
Among them is Lee Canton, closed resort to Las Vegas, which plans to re-open this coming weekend from Friday on thanks to a 6” (15cm) snowfall last weekend.
There’s also the Arizona Snowbowl, it posted 19 Inches (47cm) of snowfall in 24 hours at the weekend, the most of any US ski on April 27, 2024. It plans to reopen from 10 am – 4 pm on April May 4th & 5th.
Over in the East coast it’s Jay Peak in Vermont and Sugarloaf in Maine expected to join usual May survivor Killington to offer snow sports this weekend.
Elsewhere centres still open in May include Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper, Loveland and Winter Park in Colorado; Brian Head, Snowbird and Solitude in Utah (Brighton plans to reopen later in May); Mt Hood Meadows, Mt Bachelor and Timberline in Oregon; The Palisades and Mammoth in California and Crystal Mountain in Washington State.
