Truly unmissable on a family holiday in wintery Zillertal

The anticipation rises for many families as soon as the first glistening snowflakes begin to fall and the temperatures drop: The winter holiday together is near. For many it is a real dream to dive into an idyllic winter wonderland. Zillertal in Tyrol is proof that some dreams do come true.

Snow and fun for young and old in Zillertal

If the children are happy, so are their parents! This hardly secret recipe is known across Zillertal. And thus highly trained and motivated ski instructors take care of the little ones and look to growing their skills. After all, proper skiing takes practice! There are numerous ski schools that offer special children’s courses in every region of the valley, which is named after the main Ziller river. And our adult offers are also huge – no matter whether you are a beginner, are returning to skiing or are close to skiing with the pros.

There are more than 535 km of perfectly groomed pistes to show off those newly acquired skills to the entire family. Especially beginners can look forward to more than 167 kilometres of easy and 276 kilometres of intermediate descents. And no time needs to be wasted wondering about the various prices and rates: The Zillertal Superskipass includes the four large skiing areas Hochzillertal – Hochfügen – Spieljoch, Zillertal Arena, Mayrhofner Bergbahnen as well as the Ski- & Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000. Of course discounts are available for children and young adults.

Searching for something special

Young visitors play a major role in the Zillertal skiing areas. They are spoilt for choice as they can select Funparks, high speed slopes or ski kindergartens. The perfect challenge for adventurous families is to seek the ‘Arena Champion’ in the Zillertal Arena. SkiMovie courses, Speed Check courses and Photopoints are bundled into one big challenge. While the Zwergerl Club awaits the very youngest in Hochzillertal-Hochfügen, Hochfügen also offers a covered magic carpet. The Mayrhofner Bergbahnen cable cars feature a new Family Park at Fun Ride Ahorn with spectacular, child-friendly obstacles. The new Kidsslope in Tux-Finkenberg, part of the Ski and Glacier World 3000, is the right address for young winter sports enthusiasts. Here glacier flea Luis takes kids on a discovery tour. And by the way, the Hintertuxer Glacier is Austria’s only skiing arena that can be carved in all year long.

As different as the ski areas may be, they all have one thing in common: Tyrolean hospitality. It is always worthwhile to stop by one of the 80 mountain restaurants for a refreshment. On top of the view of the Zillertal mountain world with numerous 3000-meter peaks, you can look forward to Kaspressknödelsuppe (cheese dumpling soup), Tiroler Gröstl (roast meat and potatoes) and Kaiserschmarrn (cut-up pancake).

Had your fill of skiing?

Luckily, things are not boring off the pistes in Zillertal. A ride down one of the 14 toboggan runs with a total length of 46 kilometres is an indispensable part of a winter holiday. More than half are illuminated. Or how about a competition on the ice? Who is fastest or spins the most beautiful pirouettes? Many a parent will have a hard time keeping up with the brave skaters on any of the nine skating rinks in the valley.

And whenever the sun does take a break, a dive into the pleasantly warm water is guaranteed to be lots of fun. The Erlebnistherme Zillertal with its adventure pool, wave pool, brine pool, current channel and two giant slides is bursting with action. The so-called Black Hole in Fügen is the longest water slide in Western Austria with a length of 133 metres! The indoor pool in Mayrhofen is equally as appealing, as it offers a waterfall, a crazy river and fun waterslides.

The path to a winter dream come true

Surrounded by numerous 3000-metre peaks, Zillertal is located in the west of Austria. Regular flights from destinations across Europe such as London, Birmingham or Copenhagen arrive every day at the surrounding airports. The Four Seasons airport shuttle service operates from the airports in Innsbruck (1h to Zillertal), Munich (2h) and Salzburg (2h). It delivers visitor directly to their hotels and takes them back to the airport as well. This is a great way to conveniently get to the winter wonderland from the runway. Your holiday thus begins right upon arrival.
