US ski centre Sunday River in Maine have announced they're opening today for pass holders, but say that it's not quite the actual start of the season.

"We're not open for the season, we're just skiing because that's what we do," a resort spokesperson explained, adding, "We're thrilled to announce that we are opening for a Halloween ski day. This is not us formally opening for the season, but we couldn't pass up the opportunity for some turns."

The move comes after a week of cold weather and snowmaking. Lift service will run from 10AM to 2PM today off of the Locke Mountain Triple, with skiing on T2. Open terrain will be expert only and will not be groomed. Downloading will be required, and walking may be required pending trail conditions the resort says.

Access to the slope will be for New England Passholders, Ikon and Mountain Collective Passholders and those with Ticket Packs.

"Costumes will be mandatory for all riding the chairlift, with some special treats in store for those who help us celebrate All Hallows Eve," the spokesperson continued.

Depending on how you look at it it makes Sunday River the second US ski area to open and the first in the East for 24-25. However the small centre of Ski Ward near Boston in Massachusetts opened a small area of snow using all-weather snowmaking earlier this month. Colorado's Wolf Creek is the other open resort.

"We've said time and time again that well put our snowmaking team up against any resorts in the world, but this year, they've really outdone themselves. Thanks to their dedicated efforts, some extra cold temps this weekend, and one of the most powerful snowmaking systems in North America, we've got an extra treat for your Halloween," the sunday River spokesperson added.
