Summer Ski Area Hotel Delays Opening As “Too Much Snow”
Italy’s Passo Stelvio, a favourite summer training ground for ski teams from around the world, has announced it has had to delay its planned opening on May 31st as there’s “too much snow.”
A base area hotel at Italy’s Passo Stelvio, a favourite summer training ground for ski teams from around the world, has announced it has had to delay its planned opening on May 31st as there’s “too much snow.”
The centre itself is currently still sticking to its planned June 1st opening day although the hotel reports the Italian roads service has not been able to say when the road over the pass will be cleared of snow and able to open – it was snowing there again this morning.
“There is too much snow at Passo dello Stelvio. The opening of the road is postponed to the beginning of June, which is why the official opening of Hotel Pirovano Quarto is postponed to Friday, June 7, 2024 a spokesperson said adding, “This year big summer skiing is guaranteed on the Stelvio glaciers that are loaded with more snow than we’ve seen for a long time!”
The road closure, which is reported to be partly due to avalanche danger as much as the physical effort top clear the snow, has led to the cancellation of the planned Giro d’Italia race stage over the pass which normally precedes the ski centre opening.
Passo Stelvio has one of the longest summer ski seasons in the world, aiming to stay open until November each year, although it has faced temporary late-summer closures in Augusts and Septembers due to inadequate snow cover surviving the heat in recent years.
