Snowmaking Gets Underway in The USA

Skiers and riders in the US are eagerly anticipating the start of the 24-25 season.

Although there were some September snowfalls in California and Colorado, and there’s been more recent snowfall on high slopes in the far north of the country, it’s been predominantly unseasonably warm and sunny in recent weeks for much of the Western US however.

Although ski areas in New England, The Midwest and the West Coast have managed to be the first to open some years, its usually areas in Colorado, that are among the highest altitude not just in North America but the whole world, that manage to get a run or two open first in October each fall.

So there’s been excitement this week as several of these have been able to make at least some snow for the first time in the 24-25 season build-up, including Arapahoe Basin and Copper Mountain.

“Guns got fired up late last night and into the morning. While temperatures have still been high here in Summit County this fall, our snowmaking team is precise and ready to jump whenever the right condition window presents itself. Snowmaking is all about layering — this first layer is all about getting a good base. Hopefully, more to come soon and keep hoping for colder temps,” an Arapahoe Basin spokesperson said.

Meanwhile a spokesperson for Copper Mountain, who were doing the same, said,

“We put snow on the ground this morning. With the temps starting to drop in the evenings and into the mornings here in Summit County, our snowmakers are now taking every opportunity to start building our solid snow base. This is the first step & we’re stoked to see flakes flying!”
