Whilst much of the US is under a weather warning for extreme heat, mountainous areas in the northwest of the country received winter weather warnings in summer, ahead of snowfall arriving.

Montana was one of the states that saw the most snow, with delighted ski tourers pictured heading up the slopes at the state's Showdown mountain.

Elsewhere in Montana, Big Sky was forced to temporarily suspend summer operations due to snowfall there and Bridger Bowl posed the question on Instagram, “Should we spin the lifts?” after getting top to bottom snow.

There's currently one ski area open for lift-served skiing and riding in North America, Timberline oin Oregon.
