Scottish Centre Announces New Gondola Proposal
The Scotsman newspaper is reporting that Scottish ski centre Glencoe could get a £22 million gondola as part of a huge overhaul.
That would also see it create a new snowmaking system, wind turbine to generate green energy and tackle staff-recruitment problems with new staff accommodation as part of a £26 million masterplan.
"The Access Chairlift won’t last forever, we think a Gondola will make a good replacement. We are at the early stages of planning these new developments and look forward to sharing more details with you as they become available," a Glencoe spokesperson commented.
The Scotsman’s Roger Cox reports that the new gondola would cut the current 15 minute ascent time on the old chairlift to five and increase capacity five-fold to 3,000 people per hour.
Although Scottish ski areas have suffered badly from climate change in the 21st century, Glencoe has consistently reported the most snow and been able to open more terrain and for longer than the other centres most winters.
The Scotsman reports that Glencoe are now talking to development body Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Scottish Government to look at financing the plan.
