There’s excitement in Australia this weekend with the first pre-season snowfalls on the country’s ski slopes as well as temperatures dipping as low as -5C resulting in snowmaking systems firing up overnight.

“We’ve had our first snow up at Hotham this morning, it’s super cold and we’re really excited for winter. The temperature dropped to almost as low as -5C this morning and it feels like winter is in the air,” said Alex Pankiw, Marketing Coordinator at Hotham, where their team will be making the most of every snowmaking window thanks to a multi-year snowmaking pipeline project started this summer.

At Falls Creek, cooler alpine temperatures (-4 overnight) brought snow flurries and the chance to fire up the resort’s snow guns this morning, and continuing throughout the day, including new automated TechnoAlpin snow guns on Drovers Dream.

From here on out, they’ll also be firing at every opportunity as conditions allow, aiming to build a strong base as the winter season nears.

“There’s no better sight to wake up to than a fresh dusting across our slopes and it’s just the beginning,” says Betony Pitcher, Falls Creek Ski Lifts’ Marketing Manager. “The countdown to Opening Weekend on 7 June is officially on!”

At Australia’s largest resort, Madeleine McVie, Perisher’s Marketing Coordinator (who is pictured below), commented:

“We woke up to a fresh dusting of snow here at Perisher, we’ve fired up the guns, temperatures are dropping – winter is well and truly on its way and we’re looking forward to it!”

Unless anywhere opens early Australia’s season starts on Saturday 7 June, with most of the country enjoying a three day holiday weekend, including Monday 9th June, The King’s Birthday holiday.
