A total eclipse of the ski slopes is coming to Northeastern North America on the afternoon of Monday, April 8th, and ski resorts in the path of totality organising special events to tie in with this stunning natural event.
The Pink Floyd Classic ‘Dark side of the Moon’ is proving popular with both Jay Peak in Vermont and Sugarloaf in Maine booking Floyd cover bands to play the classic, in Jay Peak’s case, timed to finish just as the eclipse starts at around 3.20pm, at the end of the ski day.
The eclipse will plunge a 124-mile-wide path stretching from Mexico to Canada into night-like darkness and pass over ski resorts in states and provinces including Quebec, Vermont, New York, New Hampshire and Maine and less well-known ski spots like Ohio.
The path means that some resorts, also including Vermont’s Stowe and Smugglers Notch and Quebec’s Mont Sutton and Tremblant will see totality while others, including some of the region’s biggest like Main’s Sunday River and Vermont’s Killington will see “deep partial” eclipses with 98-99% darkness. The eclipse will be visible on ski slopes across North America to a lesser extent, with Colorado getting about 65%, Utah about 50%, California about 35% and BC about 20%.
Many ski areas in the region will already have closed for the season by the 8th, a week after Easter Monday, but others stay open later into spring.
“The total eclipse will be visible from anywhere on the mountain. While admission is free a lift ticket is required for anyone planning to ski/ride the mountain that day,” a Sugarloaf spokesperson explained, adding, “If you're planning to ski or snowboard …we suggest the summit or West Mountain trails. In April, spring skiing conditions are expected, so please respect any trail closures. Also note that lifts will temporarily close around 3:10 pm to prepare for total darkness for a few minutes.”
The resort also notes that safety is the number one priority when viewing a total solar eclipse and that they will be selling Sugarloaf branded solar eclipse glasses.
