- Forest fires, particularly in California, continue to threaten ski areas, but firefighters have managed to save key infrastructure.
USA Report
Long-term forecasts look promising for a snowier start to winter 2024-25 than last year's generally lackluster fall/autumn dry conditions. However, for now, it’s looking warm and dry in the Rockies, with sunny weather dominating and temperatures ranging from the mid-30s to the high 50s, just getting a degree or two below freezing on the highest peaks overnight. In the short term, it’s not looking great for October openings, as US government weather forecasting agencies expect the month to remain warmer and drier than average, which could hinder early snowmaking efforts if the prediction proves accurate. Forest fires continue to cause problems in the west, with the Cal Fire San Bernardino reaching California’s Kamchatka/6day/mid">Snow Valley at the end of last week. Firefighters have been praised for saving buildings there. It’s now only four weeks until the target opening date – November 1st – for Banff’s local Mt. Norquay ski area to open for its 2024-25 season. Higher slopes across Canada’s Western mountains keep seeing repeat snow coverings, with temperatures consistently close to freezing.
USA Forecast
There’s not much change in the forecast, with sunny weather expected to continue into the weekend, and above-freezing temperatures at high altitudes.
