California's Tahoe Peaks Turn White with Unseasonal Snowfall

• Despite the summer heat, light overnight snowfall was reported in several North American regions, including the Canadian Rockies, California’s Sierra, and Wyoming’s Tetons.
• The snow dustings were short-lived, melting away quickly by morning, but brought a temporary wintery feel to locations like Jackson Hole and Mt. Bachelor.
• Colorado's Loveland ski area has initiated its countdown clock for snowmaking, anticipating the start of the 23-24 ski season in October.

North America’s 23-24 season ended just over a week ago, but despite extremely hot weather dominating all summer, unusual weather conditions brought snowfall—albeit a light dusting in the middle of the night—first to the Canadian Rockies as we completed last week’s report, then to the Californian Sierra a few days later. In fact, the snowfall continued on slopes further north, with Tahoe's peaks briefly turning white and Mt. Bachelor in Oregon among those posting images of a snow covering. There was also light snowfall on Longs Peak in Colorado as a result of storms in the area. The thin white dusting was brief in duration, as you’d expect, and mostly gone by the morning in each case. More recently, the past few days have seen snow reported in the Tetons of Wyoming at Jackson Hole and in BC at Revelstoke. Sunshine also reported a second, heavier snow covering on Tuesday evening.

We’re back to wall-to-wall sunshine and warm temperatures after the brief snowy interval. Temperatures are dipping closer to freezing overnight on high slopes in the Rockies, now getting down to the high 30s Fahrenheit. Colorado’s Loveland has begun its website ‘start of snowmaking countdown clock,’ with snowmaking expected to begin there at the start of October, according to the clock!
