New Tram Cabins Begin Journey From Switzerland to Montana
After months of assembly at CWA in Switzerland, Big Sky Resort’s new Lone Peak Tram cabins are complete and en route to Big Sky.
Two 75-passenger cabins, each weighing 6,615 pounds, have begun the more than 5,000-mile journey from Olten, Switzerland.
The cabins departed from Olten to the port of Zeebrugge, Belgium, where they were loaded on a cargo ship. The cabins will travel by ship through the Panama Canal before reaching Port Hueneme, California, where they will be loaded onto a truck to their final destination – Big Sky, Montana.
The new cabins will be fitted to the new Lone Peak Tram which is undergoing a multi-year upgrade as part of the larger Big Sky 2025 overall resort improvement plan. Work began last summer and there’s a construction diary online here.
The resort’s original Lone Peak Tram opened in 1995 and has small cabins each capable of holding a maximum of 15 people giving it a capacity of 200 people per hour, which the new lit will quadruple.
The new lift has the same top station point but its base station is at a lower, better connected point on the mountain.
The new cabins are expected to arrive in Big Sky in late August and the lift is due to open this coming winter, all being well.
