New Hampshire’s Largest Ski Area Celebrates 50th Season
Bretton Woods, New Hampshire’s largest ski area and today part of Omni Mount Washington Resort, is celebrating its 50th season in 23-24.
Recently named by SKI magazine’s Readers’ Choice for best snow and grooming in the east this year, Bretton Woods and Omni Mount Washington Resort will be hosting several events including charity auctions of the original chairlifts, a Warren Miller film screening, talks by Dan Egan and offering special hotel packages this winter.
On December 14, 1973, organized winter recreation was introduced to the valley at Bretton woods beneath the western slope of Mount Washington surrounded by nearly 800,000 acres of the White Mountain National Forest.
The two original double chairlifts and a T-bar have evolved into ten lifts, four of which are state-of-the-art high-speed detachable quads, plus New Hampshire’s only eight-passenger gondola.
The total ski terrain of 98.1 acres in 1973 was comprised of eight beginner and intermediate trails that are still favourites today. Five decades later, the number of trails has soared from eight to 62, plus 35 acres of glades for a total of 464 acres of skiable terrain – the most in the state.
In September 2009, Omni Hotels began management of the property, which is home to the Omni Mount Washington Hotel, site of the International Monetary Conference of 1944, as well as Bretton Woods.
Recent renovations and expansions of the hotel include the new Presidential Wing and on-mountain Rosebrook Lodge, plus renovated dining rooms. In recent years, the resort unveiled a restored 18-hole Mount Washington Golf Course, 25,000-square-foot The Spa, 20,000-square-foot Conference Center, outdoor pool complex and renovated guestrooms, lobby and public spaces.
