Just days after temperatures in Denver hit 80F, a major snowstorm has brought powder conditions to the Rockies, with some ski areas in Colorado and Utah posting over a foot of April powder in 24 hours.
Many ski areas in the region have already closed for the 23-24 season but the fresh snow provided a big boost to those still open, including Vail and Steamboat, which reported 12” (30cm) and 11” (28cm) respectively just ahead of their final weekends of the season.
“It’s a leg burner out there. About 22” of snow has fallen from this storm, which brings our season total over 300 inches,” a spokesperson for Copper Mountain, which recently announced it was extending its season and would stay open as long as it could into May, commented.
Up in Utah, Snowbird, which will remain open into May, said it had had 25cm (10”) of snowfall from the storm.
The storm arrived with winter weather advisories issued for Alaska, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah even though we are now into the latter half of meteorological springtime.
