High ski slopes in Colorado have turned white for the first time in the run up to the 24-25 ski season.

Ski resorts including Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Keystone and Loveland ...all of which hope to be among the first in North America to open for their 24-25 seasons next month or in early November, were amongst those posting pictures of snow covered mountain tops today.

Temperatures had been hovering close to freezing overnight for some days and centres had been preparing their snowmaking systems ready to start base building imminently, so the natural snowfall is an added boost.

There are currently no areas open for the 24-25 season yet in North America with October usually seeing a race to be the first. The earliest named target opening date so far is for Mt Norquay near Banff in Alberta, Canada, which is hoping for November 1st.

Banff has already had several snowfalls over the past few weeks, and whilst that's not unusual in early meteorological fall, late summer snowfalls on some ski slopes in Arizona and California at the end of August were more unusual.

The last area still open from winter 23-24, Timberline on Mt Hood in Oregon, ended its season less than a month ago, in mid-August.
