Europe’s most Southerly Ski Area Opens Early with its Biggest Ever Area Open For Last Weekend of November

Europe’s most southerly mainland ski resort and also Spain’s highest ski area, Sierra Nevada, is opening for the 2018-19 ski season tomorrow, Saturday November 24, 2018, a week earlier than planned.

What’s more the terrain available will be the largest amount the resort has ever offered this early in the season, staff believe.

A total of 9 lifts and 43 kilometres of slopes will be available, providing a vertical drop of 1,100 metres with accumulated snow between 20cm and 150cm depending on the altitude.

The news of Sierra Nevada’s early opening came after another Spanish resort, Masella, was one of the first in Europe to open for the season on November 1st following big snowfalls in the Pyrenees in the last week of October.

Although there has been a warm spell since it is now cold and snowing again in the region (the picture above was taken at Formigal today, the other pictures are from Sierra Nevada today).

Most ski areas in Spain and Andorra are especially keen to open by early December as the country has a major public holiday on December 6th which gives Spaniards a long weekend off when they’re free to head to the ski slopes – if they’re open.  This year is looking good.

Tour operator Ski Weekends specialises in packages to Sierra Nevada, located in the southern Spanish region of Andalucía and within 40 minutes’ drive from the city of Granada – with views stretching to the Mediterranean Sea and beyond to North Africa on a clear day. They’re offering short-break packages holidays from the UK starting from December 1, 2018.

When the resort is fully open there will be 110 kilometres of slopes available across 130 runs, offering one of the longest vertical drops in Europe.

Dan Fox, Managing Director of Ski Weekends, said: “Sierra Nevada has a fantastic snow record and often opens in early December despite its proximity to the southern tip of Europe. But with conditions as good as this so early on, it presents an opportunity to grab an early ski trip and enjoy the slopes as well as the Spanish hospitality and food the region is so well known for.”
