Australia’s 2024 Season Continues In Tasmania this Weekend
After Perisher decided it couldn't operate this weekend, it seemed Australia's season was over, but it has now been confirmed that Mt Mawson on Tasmania, will open for skiing and boarding this weekend.
The news that Australia’s largest report, Perisher, was having to close on end its season on Wednesday this week rather than make it to Sunday as hoped, due to the impact of unfavourable weather on its diminished snowpack, appeared to spell the end of the country’s 2024 ski season.
However, its now been confirmed that one of the country’s smallest ski centres, Mt Mawson on the southerly island of Tasmania, will open for skiing and boarding this weekend.
Tasmania has seen some of its best snowfalls in September meaning Mt Mawson could open, however a problem with a lift was causing operational issues. But the centre’s operators mow believe this issue has been fixed.
“STSA volunteers are working feverishly today in great snow conditions to replace the rope on the Mt Mawson Tow in preparation for opening this weekend! This is not a simple task, it is expected that these hard working volunteers will need to continue well into this evening. At this stage we are running Uni Tow, and we are about 90% sure that Mt Mawson Tow will be ready for opening on Saturday,”
...a statement from the Southern Tasmania Ski Association (STSA) earlier on Friday explained, adding later,.
“The new Mawson Tow rope is now fitted and ready to go! It had been planned to leave the replacement to the summer working bees, but the snow on the ski field is so amazing that it was decided it was worth the effort to get the Mawson run in action. We were also motivated by the fact that this means that Mt Mawson Tasmania will be the only skifield open in Australia this weekend. Come up to Mt Field this weekend and enjoy these superb Spring snow conditions whilst they last!
