Asia Weekly Snow Roundup #267
(Updated 13 November 2024) A comprehensive review of snow conditions, weather, and updates for Japan's winter sports destinations.
• The Yeti ski area reopened its slopes over the weekend after previous typhoon conditions with warm, windy weather and rain disrupted the initial snowmaking efforts.
• Positive signs appeared in the Japan Alps, with light snow covering many areas at the end of last week.
• Nozawa Onsen reported one of the higher snow accumulations, with around 10cm on its upper slopes.
JAPAN REPORT
After several weeks of being unable to re-open its slopes made using an all-weather snowmaking machine, the Yeti ski area has managed to do just that at the weekend after the typhoon conditions with warm, windy weather and rain broke up the initial slope. There were more positive signs in the Japan Alps at the end of last week, with light snow covering many areas on the first of the season. Nozawa Onsen posted one of the more considerable accumulations on its higher slopes – reporting 10cm (4”). Most of Japan’s larger ski areas aim to open on the final weekend of this month or the first weekend of December – snow permitting.
JAPAN FORECAST
It’s looking like quite a dry end to the week, with plenty of sunshine and temperatures oscillating between around -8C overnight and +10C in the daytime. Snowmaking will be possible where systems exist, but the warm daytime highs may sometimes set production back.
