From Snow to Jungle: Gassan Ski Area Battles Heat While Keeping Slopes Open

  • Gassan, Japan's lone summer ski area, maintains operations through June despite decreasing snow depths.
  • Video footage showcases snowy pathways amidst lush greenery, leading to the chairlift base, highlighting the unique summer skiing experience.
  • Despite occasional rain and thunderstorms disrupting activities, daily skiing and riding continue from 8 am, with hopes to extend operations into July

JAPAN REPORT

Japan's only summer ski area, Gassan (0/110cm), remains open through June. Video from the centre shows a snowy path being maintained through the green jungle to the base of the chairlift. The upper slope snow depth has fallen again with temperatures in the 20s Celsius, but will hopefully allow higher runs to remain open up to July, as planned. The past week has seen rain and thunderstorms interrupt operations at times, but otherwise daily skiing and riding from 8 am as usual.

Overnight lows on high slopes still drop to +2-3C some days, +8C others, daytime highs are generally around +15C but on some afternoons it'll be higher, nearer +20C.
