Three New Zealand Ski Areas To Start 2018 Seasons This Saturday
Three ski areas in New Zealand are to open for the first weekend in June. Two of these are opening earlier than planned.
One, Cardrona, week earlier than their planned June 9th opening date, the other, Coronet Peak, two weeks ahead of their published June 16th opening date.
Cardrona will open for a ‘bonus weekend’ on June 2nd and 3rd ahead of their planned opening day. The ski area has received 90cm of fresh snowfall over the past week so has top-to-bottom snow cover.
“We’ve been absolutely frothing to get out skiing and snowboarding when it’s looking this good – and it’s amazing to be able to bring all our guests up to get their fix too,” Cardrona general manager Bridget Legnavsky told local media.
The resort’s McDougall’s Chondola, beginners’ area and The Lounge will be open.
Coronet Peak will also open on June 2nd, but on the Saturday only, after it too saw big pre-season snowfalls.
Yep we’re doing it! 😁❄️🙌 Get set for the ultimate season teaser on Saturday as we open Coronet Express AND Meadows Chairlift from 9am to 4pm this Saturday the 2nd June. Only 20 minutes from Queenstown – come up and play!

The two join Mt Ruaphu which had already planned to open its ‘Happy Valley’ snow play area on June 2nd, using an all-weather snowmaking system. However it too has had a lot of natural snowfall as well.
In fact the cold spell in New Zealand is expected to bring more sow in the coming days as well as providing temperatures low enough for snowmaking systems to run at capacity.
This should mean a good start to the 2018 ski season as we move further in to June across the country.
