SNOW NEWS UPDATED 4 SEPTEMBER 2008

INTRODUCTION Kaprun in Austria has been temporarily closed to snowsports due to the shallow snow cover.

AUSTRIA Kaprun (44cm) has temporarily closed the pistes on Thursday due to the shallow piste depth. The resort will resume operations once the cover improves. It is still possible to ski at the Dachstein glacier (520cm), Hintertux (105cm) and the Molltal glacier (140cm). The cover at all three resorts is soft due to the mild temperatures and recent sunny weather. It is cloudy at Molltal and Hintertux on Thursday but the limited visibility will be short lived as better weather is expected over the weekend.

FRANCE It is no longer possible to ski at Les Deux Alpes, Tignes or Val d’Isere. The glaciers are currently closed to snowsports.

SWITZERLAND Poor weather is affecting conditions in Switzerland. This means that both Saas Fee and Zermatt are closed for skiing on Thursday. Unfortunately both resorts are forecast more wet weather over the weekend too.

ITALY Our only reported Italian summer snowsports destination that is open is Val Senales (40cm). Unfortunately wet weather is expected as we head towards the weekend but any showers should only be light and short lived Cervinia and Presena are both closed for summer skiing.

NORTH AMERICA The summer ski season has finished on the Blackcomb glacier at Whistler, Canada and skiing will resume on the glacier on the 27th November. The ski lifts are closed at Timberline in America until 13th September for annual maintenance.

AUSTRALIA Dustings of snow have fallen this week at all of our reported Australian resorts and spring conditions can be found across the country.15cm of snow fell at Ben Lomond (30/45cm) on Tuesday which improved the on-piste conditions across the mountain. The off-piste still has limited cover so it is advisable to stick to the trails. At Mount Hotham (131/131cm) and Thredbo (61/160cm) the snow patrol are advising that skiers and boarders should stick to the groomed trails in the early morning. At Mount Hotham the cover will soften as the day progresses so good skiing will be available across the hill from mid to late morning.

NEW ZEALAND The conditions on the south island are more like you would expect in the middle of winter rather than during the spring skiing season. Fresh snowfalls on Wednesday night have boosted the cover at many resorts and more snow is expected before the weekend Treble Cone (73/99cm), Mount Hutt (290cm) and Mount Olympus (140/330cm) all report at least 10cm of fresh snow. The riding is superb with a soft covering on the packed base. Fresh lines can be enjoyed off the trails and more snow is expected to land before the weekend.Porter Heights (180/220cm) is again open for riding and the conditions are superb on Thursday following 20cm of snow falling overnight. Further snowfalls are expected on Friday then the weekend is forecast to be a little brighter Mount Dobson (150/180cm), Mount Lyford (310/350cm) and Rainbow (200cm) are all closed on Thursday. Wintry weather has reduced visibility at Mount Lyford while wet weather has closed the facilities at Rainbow. The good news for Rainbow is that the temperature is forecast to drop during Thursday so the precipitation should turn to snow by the end of the day.The weather is milder on the north island providing spring riding conditions at Turoa (465cm) and Whakapapa (350cm). The Moro Freestyle Series - K2 Skis & Snowboards Big Air takes place at Turoa on Saturday.

CHILE No fresh snow has been reported at our featured Chilean resorts this week. The snow cover has packed down at all of our reported resorts but this does not detract from the excellent riding they all offer. New snow is expected to fall as we head into the weekend.Excellent riding conditions are reported in the Chilean Three Valleys. Valle Nevado (207cm) has the second deepest base in the area behind La Parva (460/580cm). With an average snow base of over two metres there is more than enough snow for all at Valle Nevado. Fresh snowfalls are forecast to land before the weekend. The snow cover at Portillo (280/336cm) has packed down this week but the skiing is still excellent across the whole area. The heavy clouds on Thursday are forecast to deliver more snow before the weekend.

ARGENTINA Snow fell across Argentina during the early part of the week and excellent conditions can be found in all three of the resorts that the Ski Club reports on.At Las Lenas (71/220cm) the best conditions are on the upper pistes which are covered in powder. The off-piste has become tracked out but more snow is expected on Thursday and Friday which will improve the skiing on offer. Both Cerro Catedral (100/315cm) and Chapelco (92/394cm) have fantastic conditions from top to bottom. Powder can be found across both resorts but at Chapelco some of the lifts are closed which has reduced access to areas of the mountain.
